Puerto de la Duquesa …Costa del Sol's best kept secret
Just of the main N340 coast road, some 30 kilometres west of Marbella lies the beautiful town of Puerto de la Duquesa . Although within easy reach of Malaga airport (55 minutes) and Gibraltar airport (30 minutes), this little oasis is very different from the busier coastal resorts.
Puerto de la Duquesa offers full marina services with 300 berths for boating enthusiasts, whether they are participants or interested spectators.
Puerto de la Duquesa offers a very good selection of bars and restaurants, with prices and menus to suit all tastes. Restaurants include cuisine from France, Italy, Thailand, China, India, Great Britain and Ireland as well as Spain, but undoubtedly the fish restaurants are the ones 'not to be missed'. Many have their own boats and will feature the catch-of-the-day on their menus!
A limited selection of shops offer all the essential requirements, and some luxury items whilst for the real shopping enthusiast, Gibraltar and Marbella and Puerto Banus are within easy reach. The marina waterfront area is closed to traffic providing a safe area for children and preserving the serenity. Day or at night enjoy strolls along the promenade and amongst sailing boats and splendid yachts at La Duquesa Harbour characterised for its arched gateways of beauty and quality.
The port of La Duquesa is flanked by two very long, sandy beaches with chringuitios, or beach bars. To the east, one beach stretches to the charming Spanish town of Sabinillas, where there is a popular Sunday market, and on to Estepona, to the west the other winds around the coast to Sotogrande. A small fishing fleet still operates from the port adding to the authenticity and atmosphere. The main N340 highway passes Duquesa, which is accessed by an underpass. Whilst this can be a busy artery from Gibraltar to Malaga, a new inland toll road shortens the airport journey of both Malaga and Gibraltar. La Duquesa seems like a thousand miles away from the throng of the holiday resorts and offers an unparalleled quality of life in Southern Spain.
